School Calendar - Where do we stand?

With the last few weeks of inclement weather, we wanted to provide an update as to where we currently stand on the Yancey County Schools Calendar.

Thursday, February 18, 2016, is day 107 of our 180 day school year – which is actually a little bit better than where we were this time last year. Here in Yancey County Schools, we calculate our school year on the number of instructional hours (1,025) with a 180 day calendar vs. the other option allowed by the state which is a flat 185 day calendar.

A couple of years ago, YCS extended our instructional day by a few minutes which gives us an overage or a “bank” of time in addition to the 1,025 hours. Each time we have a 2 or 3 hour delay, those hours are deducted from this bank of time. With the recent weather and loss of student days, YCS has used all Annual Leave Days and Teacher Workdays originally built into the school calendar. For the remainder of the school year, any days missed will be No Days.

Currently, our last day of school for students is Friday, June 10, 2016 and the final day for teachers/assistants is Monday, June 13, 2016. With using No Days and Bank Time, Dr. Tipton does hope to avoid Saturday School or having to use Spring Break days. But keep in mind, Spring is still several weeks away and if we experience another week or more of lost school days, this plan will have to be reassessed at that time.

We appreciate the patience and understanding of our parents and the community as we continue to work through this school year. It is our goal to keep everyone as updated as possible as we move forward in our school calendar.
