First grade began a “Winter” unit in January. We started our unit with several books: Snow by Nicole Helget, The Puffins Are Back! by Gail Gibbons, Penguins by Gail Gibbons, Penguins by Emilie U. Lepthien, Penguin by Jinny Johnson, and Tacky the Penguin by Helen Lester. Students fostered technology skills by creating a “Wanted” poster for the students using technology. Students were able to recall three facts they had learned about Emperor penguins and typed them on the computer using keyboard skills. Students made penguins using Oreo cookies and Hershey’s candy. They have created numerous art projects about Penguins, including an “All I Know About Penguins” mini-booklet. We have compared the habitats of Rain Forest Animals, local wildlife animals, and Antarctica animals. In discussing Antarctica, we have learned about ice and snow. Students made “Snowflakes” mini-booklets and created snowflakes using Popsicle sticks, puzzle pieces, and glitter glue. |
