CAFETERIA BENEFITS

The Yancey County School System partners with First Financial to offer additional policies including vision, dental, life, accident, disability, supplemental retirement plans, etc. Flexible spending accounts are also available for medical and childcare needs. New employees may enroll in plans throughout the year. Open enrollment for current employees occurs in the fall for the next calendar year.

RETIREMENT SYSTEM

All Yancey County Schools personnel who are regular, full-time employees are required by law to become members of the North Carolina Teachers and State Employees System. An employee contributes 6% of his or her salary along with the local school system’s contribution of over 16%. The 6% employee contribution is tax sheltered.

After five years (10 years if you became a member on or after 8/1/2011) of creditable service, the employee qualifies for monthly retirement benefits, based on the retirement salary formula. This benefit is prorated based on age and service.

The retirement system also pays a death benefit to the designated beneficiary(ies) of any member who has contributed to the retirement system for at least one year and who dies while still an active member. The death benefit pays a minimum of $25,000 and maintains a maximum of $50,000.
