Yancey Evening School was started in 1991 to address the need for an at-risk youth program. Each county has a state mandate to have an Alternative Learning Program (ALP) to serve socially, emotionally and academically challenged youth. The intention of Yancey Evening School was to help students graduate who might not otherwise.
Yancey Evening School (Y.E.S!) was initially founded through the team effort and vision of Cathy Morrison, Sylvia Murphy, Thom Koch and Dr. Vernon Chapman. Dr. Chapman and the Yancey County School Board realized the need for educational opportunities for students who could not make it in the traditional school setting. With their support, Thom Koch, the first teacher, developed a program which would allow at-risk students to fulfill regular diploma requirements. As of January 2008 one hundred and eighty one students have graduated with high school diplomas from Yancey Evening School. An additional three hundred students at Mountain Heritage High School have benefited from the Y.E.S! program.
