National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine

This is for 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th graders whose GPA is 3.7 and are interested in a career of medicine.  The cost is approximately $2,205.00.  There is financial assistance available if the student qualifies.  The cost includes accommodations, breakfasts and dinners, instruction, program materials.  The forum is held in the summer in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C.  Scholarships are offered through the program to help cover the costs.   Forum students have the opportunity to learn from medical leaders and research pioneers - visionaries and practitioners.  During the Forum, the students focus on content, issues and practice in lectures and small-group seminars, as well as one-on-one with medical students, physicians, surgeons and biomedical researchers.  Candidates for admission must be outstanding high school students who have shown academic excellence and leadership potential at the honors level.  For more information you may wish to visit their website at:

(FREE)  Lees-McRae College Educational Talent Search.
Offered throughout the school year for 9-12th graders.  (ETS) is an educational outreach program, funded by the U.S. Department of Education and sponsored by Lees-McRae College. The mission of this program is to provide necessary support for middle and high school students to complete high school and enroll in a postsecondary institution (2-year or 4-year college program) after graduation. Two-thirds of the participants come from low-income families and have parents who have not received a baccalaureate degree. The other third may be any student who needs the services we provide. (FREE)  Upward Bound
For 9th-12th grade students.  The Upward Bound program at MHHS helps high school students who want to go to a four-year college develop the skills and the motivation they need to succeed in high school and to enter and be successful in college. The Academic Year Program helps by weekly tutoring , academic advising, cultural, social, and personal-growth activities, opportunities to visit other college campuses, assistance for seniors as they apply for college admission, scholarships, and financial aid (fee waivers for SAT and ACT registration).  The Summer Program prepares students for college life and for the next school year of coursework in high school.  Rising 10th and 11th Grade Students on the Mars Hill College campus live in college dormitories, have classes in English, math, science, and foreign language, have daily tutoring sessions, creative art electives, volunteer for local charitable organizations, explore careers of interest, and have trips throughout North Carolina.    They have a week of college visits, a week , prepare for the SAT entrance exam, and explore career opportunities.  High School Graduates Bridge Program – students take up to six hours of summer school classes and are provided room and board free of charge (worth nearly $2000.00), have academic advising and tutoring and study skill instruction.  Applicants must meet family income guidelines determined by the federal government and/or be among the first generation in their family to college.  Potential Upward Bound participants are referred to the program by guidance counselors, teachers, community resources, parents, and friends.  Students may even refer themselves.  All referred students fill out an application (these are available in Mr. Dan Graham’s office in the Counseling Dept.), participate in an interview at their school with Upward Bound staff.  Selection to the program is based on the student’s motivation, academic potential, and desire to go to a four-year college.  For more information, please see Mr. Dan Graham in Counseling Office or call Mars Hill College Upward Bound 1-888-230-5643, P.O. (FREE) N.C. Governor’ Page Program
For grades 9 – 12.  Students must be between 15 and 18 years old.  This is sponsored through the State of N.C. Office of the Governor in Raleigh.  Students will have a 1-week opportunity in Raleigh to gain knowledge of the functions and roles of the state government.  They will tour government buildings, hold various responsibilities such as: delivering legislative bills, filing, assisting in mass mailing, answering telephones and delivering agency messages.  Information is usually available the end of  February. 


(FREE)  NC State University Resource Conservation Workshop.   
One student from Mountain Heritage High School will be selected.  Week of intensive study requiring student attention and participation in a wide range of conservation topics.  Subjects to be covered:  Soil Characteristics and Soil Conservation, Wildlife and Fisheries Management, Forest management, Nonagricultural Uses for Soils, Water Quality and Watershed management.  Student will be housed in the Wood Residence Hall on NCSU campus. Meals are included. 
 

(FREE) Western Carolina University

Youth Leadership Development Program offers a FREE 2-week residential leadership camp in the summer.  Only 2 students (1 male and 1 female) can be nominated from ACHS.  If there are several interested students then a committee will determine which 2 are nominated. Students not eligible: If they are currently being served by the State Department of Public Instruction’s gifted and talented program or if they have attended Legislators’ School previously they are not eligible.  Criteria:   For 9th, 10th  or 11th grade; Students should demonstrate positive leadership potential.  They should be able, with extra motivation and opportunities to become leaders; Students should display the need, interest, and ability to acquire skills for increasing personal accomplishment, responsible citizenship, and academic achievements; There are two – 2 week sessions usually held in June and the student must provide their own transportation to and from Western Carolina.  For more information also see http://ore.wcu.edu/lsyld/legislators.htm.


(FREE)  Western Carolina University Upward Bound Math and Science
Regional Center’s LEADERS Summer Program

Students must be in the 9th, 10th or 11th grade.  This is a 6 week camp held on campus.  Students must have a strong interest in “hands on” science (especially environmental), willingness to work both independently and within small groups, be motivated, have a desire to learn, parents who did not attend a 4-year college or family’s income is below a federal set level, must have at least a “C” average. You may also wish to visit their website:

Architecture Summer Program
.
Students must be 16 years old.  Held at the College of Architecture – The University of Charlotte.  Cost is approx. $475.00.  This program is usually held in June.  Information is usually available the first of March.   


ASU Math CampBasic Algebra Camp and Geometry/Algebra Camp.
For 9th-12th grade students.  This camp is for students who love math, hate math, fear math, excel at math, and/or need help with math.  The Basic Algebra Camp is a four day – 3 hour program and is usually held in June.  You may also wish to visit their website:

ASU Forensic Science Camp.  
For 9th-12th grade students.  This camp is usually held in June.  The student will get the opportunity to investigate a suspicious arson, detect and classify fingerprints, identify unknown drugs, compare trace evidence using a microscope, and detect gunshot residue just life professional investigators.  Students will need to bring bed linens, bath linens, notebook, pencil/pen, swimsuits, and spending money.  There are only 24 spaces available.  Cost is approx. $449.00, with a $50.00 deposit. Broyhill Leadership Conference.  
For rising 10th graders through college age students who are interested in personal development and leadership training.  Cost is approx. $200.00.  Held at Queens University of Charlotte. Usually held in July. You may wish to visit their website at:

Catalyst Conference
A leadership and diversity conference at UNC designed to help 9th-11th grade high school students be an advocate for positive social change in their communities.  Workshops, discussion groups, activities, fun games, awesome cultural show, hot mixer and the college life experience. Cost is approx. $30.00 (includes all meals and lodging).  It is a two day camp.  The conference is usually held in February  at UNC-Chapel Hill.  Student must fill out an application.

ETSU Quillen College of Medicine

Health Explorers is a one-week summer residential career camp for students completing the 9th grade.  Its primary goal is to develop a larger pool of disadvantaged students considering health careers by introducing students to the ranges of health careers available.  Students will attend career presentations by health practitioners, participate in health related demonstrations and have the opportunity to tour a variety of clinical facilities.  Students must have a GPA of 2.5, be a citizen of the United States and be economically or educationally disadvantaged.  Cost is approx. $150.00.  Information is usually received around the 1st of March. 


Design  Camp – College of Design, NC State University, Raleigh, NC.
For 9th-12th grade students.  Students work with faculty and graduate students on projects – architecture, landscape architecture, industrial design, art and design and graphic design. Students may be asked to build hanging gardens, vertical living spaces, create billboards, etc.  You may also wish to visit their website:

Duke Tip Scholar Weekend at Appalachian State University.
Held in March, applications/brochures available in February.  Open to all 7th-12th graders who have participated in a TIP search or have been identified as academically gifted by local school criteria.  Students enroll in one class and explore material typically not included in school curricula.  The spring choices are in March and are Physics, the Exploration of Nature’s Laws, Exploring the Language of Nature Through Creative Writing, Digital Photography: Fun and Pixels, and Playback Theatre Intensive.  Upon acceptance, additional information will be sent directly to the students from TIP.  Tuition covers housing, food, course activities, and a limited illness/accident insurance policy.  Class size is limited.   Cost is approx. $225.00-$250.00. 


Duke University Summer Youth Programs - Duke Drama Workshop:  9th-11th grades.
Usually held in July and the cost are approx. as follows:  Residential Camper - $1565.00 and Extended Camper - $1025.00.  Offers high school students intense drama experience.  The workshop provides a supportive environment for students who are committed to refining their skills and building a community of actors.  Participants attend daily acting classes to learn the creative and technical processes of acting and rehearsal periods of selected scenes from plays.  Based on their individual areas of interest, students select from several acting classes and rehearsal periods representing drama, musical theater, and comedy. $300.00 deposit. Limited spaces, first apply. Enterprise Leadership Conference sponsored by The Jesse Helms Center. 
This is a 5-day conference for rising 10th, 11th and 12th  grade students at Wingate University or Campbell University.  The goals are to promote understanding of free market economics, personal responsibility, and the role of government in a constitutional republic.  Core programs and activities include:  Company competition, virtual trade mission, character education, laws of life essay contest and speakers.  Participants work in companies of 10 to 15 to manufacture a product or provide a service.  Activities include lessons on marketing, production, costs of doing business, profits, paying taxes and the importance of philanthropy.  Participants are exposed to successful entrepreneurs and leaders.  The conference is at Wingate University.  There is a processing fee.    You may also wish to visit their website for more information.

James A. Harrell Jr. School of Government. 
For 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students, must be a resident of North Carolina. This is a 3 night, 4 day residency at North Carolina State University. Over the four day period, students meet with nearly 50 legislators to discuss careers in politics and issues ranging from education to the health and safety of North Carolina’s children and families.  These students become a working legislative body and discuss various sides of arguments including cell phone use in automobiles and sales tax increases on various products.  They do this while being lobbied by professionals who argue these issues everyday.  Students are provided with direct practical experience, and thereby gain first-hand knowledge of the legislative, judicial and executive branches of government.  Tuition is approximately $230.00.  Information is usually available in March, please see your school counselor. 


Junior Statesman Summer School
3 week opportunity  for 9th-11th grade students at Georgetown Univ. in Washington, DC, Princeton University in Princeton, NJ, Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, Stanford University. in Palo Alto, California, or Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.  This is for students who have a very high interest in politics and current evens, has leadership potential, enjoys discussing and debating issues, is successful in English and Social Studies classes, is able to live in a dorm setting for 3 weeks, and be willing to participate in recreational activities, dances, trips off campus, talent show, and 4th of July festivities.  The cost is approx. $4,150 and includes tuition, housing, meals, textbooks and other academic expenses.  Students can apply for partial scholarships based on financial need and academic merit.   You may also wish to visit their website at:

Lees Mc-Rae Summer Theatre - Creative & Performing Arts Camp.
For 9th-12th grade students.  Cost is approx. $195.00 per week.  Participation in classes focusing on dance, literary arts, music, movement, theatre arts, and visual arts.  For more information please call 828-898-8739. 


Miss Teen USA Pageant
Girls must be between 15-19, single, a US citizen and at least a six-month resident of North Carolina.  Contestants will be judged in three equal categories consisting of personal interview, swimsuit and evening gown.  There will not be a talent competition.  Once information packet is received by Miss Teen USA, she will be interviewed by phone.  Following the interview, the selection committee will notify the girls by mail if they have been selected to compete in the pageant.  


NATIONAL STUDENT LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
Must be a 9th, 10th, 11th grade student.  If you are interested in being nominated to attend the National Student Leadership conference.    Qualifications: 1) Must have a “B” average; 2) Extracurricular activity; and 3) Leadership potential. The conference will focus on the following: Arts, Business, Forensic Science, International Diplomacy, Law, Medicine, Political Science, and Studying Abroad.  For more information please see their website at

NC State University – General High Shelton Leadership Camp
For 9th-12th grade students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.  Previous leadership experience in clubs or other organizations desired.  Located at the Eastern 4H Environmental Education Conference Center, Columbia, NC.  It is held in July and is for 5 days.  Applications can be obtained on their website:  www.edu/sheltonleadership.com  


NC Youth Legislative Assembly
Held in Raleigh, NC during March.  Cost is approx. $100.00 per student.  Registration includes meals, t-shirt and conference materials.  This is a mock legislative session where high school students voice their opinions and vote on issues concerning local, state and national government.  Each youth delegate is a member of one of 10 legislative committees.  YLA is open to all All NC students 9-12, who are interested in learning more about government and the legislative process.  Information is usually received about this opportunity in February. The student will receive written notice of acceptance or denial of their application by the first of March.  Applications can be obtained by visiting their website at

Outward Bound.
For students 9th-12th grade students.  Students spend time in the wilderness, working with a group of strangers to conduct a successful expedition.  For motivated students.  Courses are two and three weeks long.  Activities include backpacking, rock climbing, mountain biking, whitewater rafting and many other activities.  You may also wish to visit their website:

People To People Ambassador Programs
Student’s must have outstanding scholastic and leadership merit.  (Recommended students will receive a packet in the mail with information about this program, including the costs, where it is held, etc.) 
Each program's activities emphasize leadership development, team building, community service, academic coursework, excursions and social interaction.  Students need to be in grades 6 through 12 at the time of travel to be eligible for the summit. Students reside in a college dormitory suite with one to three roommates of the same gender and approximate age. Rural High School Medical Camp, hosted by the James H. Quillen College of Medicine (ETSU). 
In an effort to increase the number of primary care physicians who choose to practice in rural areas, the Department of Family Medicine has sought to have a greater influence upon high school students during a period which is critical to their career determinations. Rural high school students eyeing a career in medicine and the health sciences can get an early glimpse into the field by entering the sixth annual camp.   The camp encourages the students to consider a career that previously may have appeared out of reach and gives them a set of experiences to guide them for preparation for entering medical school. Tuition for the summer program is approx. $125, which includes room, all meals, entertainment, and transportation. VOICE OF DEMOCRACY
Grand Prize $25,000.00 to any college the student chooses.  For students 9-12th grade.  Submit a required entry form, along with their essay and recording to the local VFW Post. Local – 7 winners will receive:  $200.00;  Top Winner will advance to the State (Greensboro)  VFW will pay for trip for student and family.  State Winner:  Advance to Washington – VFW will pay for trip for student and family.  Winner receives $25,000.00 scholarship. 


Western Carolina Legislators’ School for Youth Leadership Development
Only two students can attend from Mountain Heritage High per year.  Student must be in the 9th or 10th grade, must be willing to learn new leadership skills, stretch to do more than they think they can do, learn about themselves, broaden their vision of the world, have fun, live in the dorm for two weeks in July, and must provide their own transportation to and from Western Carolina University.  Information is available the end of January.

Summer program for academically gifted 10th and 11th grade students. This is a 6-week program that is sponsored by the department of public instruction.  Selected students attend camp at either Salem College in Winston-Salem or Meredith College in Raleigh.  The following are areas that 10th grade students can apply for:  art, choral music, drama, dance, and instrumental music. 

(FREE) Summer Ventures in Science and Mathematics
For current 10th and 11th (rising 11th & 12th) grade students.  This is a 4-week enrichment camp that takes place at one of the following campuses:  Appalachian State University, East Carolina University, N.C. Central University, UNC at Charlotte, UNC at Wilmington and Western Carolina University.  This is for students who are doing well academically, motivated, and interested in pursuing a career in the science and/or math areas.  Applications can be picked up in the counseling dept. or you may apply online.

Usually held in May. A 4 day enrichment session at UNC-Chapel Hill.  For 10th grade students. Allows the student to explore many academic, social and cultural opportunities available at the UNC-Chapel Hill.  Student must have a 3.0 GPA.  Students should demonstrate evidence of leadership, motivation, and responsibility.  Students should not have had extensive enrichment opportunities in the past (such as gifted programs, academic enrichment camps, or frequent family travel).  Nominees must provide their own transportation to and from Chapel Hill.  Nominees must be able to attend the entire NC Renaissance session. Information is usually available in January of each year.  Selection will be made in March.

(FREE) Skyline Leadership Conference
Held each June.  For 9th, 10th and 11th grade  (ages 15-18) students.  Must be able to attend the camp for the whole week at White Lake, NC. Be willing to utilize training following participation in the leadership conference.  Have leadership potential.  Previous Conference attendees may not reapply for this program in any subsequent year..  The selection process for Co-op Camp is conducted by Skyline personnel.   Transportation will be provided to and from the camp.  Students whose parents are members of Skyline (through their residential telephone) may apply.  Must be 15 years old by June 1st.

(FREE)  Western Carolina University Upward Bound Math and Science Regional Center’s LEADERS Summer Program.  Students must be in the 9th, 10th or 11th grade.  This is a 6 week camp held on campus.  Students must have a strong interest in “hands on” science (especially environmental), willingness to work both independently and within small groups, be motivated, have a desire to learn, parents who did not attend a 4-year college or family’s income is below a federal set level, must have at least a “C” average, and be willing to stay on campus for 6 weeks in the summer.  You may also wish to visit their website:  www.wcu.edu/ubms

Architecture Summer Program

ASU Forensic Science Camp.  
For 9th-12th grade students.  This camp is held in June.  The student will get the opportunity to investigate a suspicious arson, detect and classify fingerprints, identify unknown drugs, compare trace evidence using a microscope, and detect gunshot residue just life professional investigators.  Students will need to bring bed linens, bath linens, notebook, pencil/pen, swimsuits, and spending money.  There are only 24 spaces available.  Cost is approx. $449.00, with a $50.00 deposit. ASU Math CampBasic Algebra Camp and Geometry/Algebra Camp.

Duke Tip Scholar Weekend at Appalachian State University.
Held in March, applications/brochures available in February.  Open to all 9th-12th graders who have participated in a TIP search or have been identified as academically gifted by local school criteria.  Students enroll in one class and explore material typically not included in school curricula.  The spring choices are usually Physics, the Exploration of Nature’s Laws, Exploring the Language of Nature Through Creative Writing, Digital Photography: Fun and Pixels, and Playback Theatre Intensive.  Upon acceptance, additional information will be sent directly to the students from TIP.  Tuition covers housing, food, course activities, and a limited illness/accident insurance policy.  Class size is limited.  Deadline for application is the first of March.  Cost is approx. $225.00-$250.00.

Elon University – Athletic Training Day
For high school sophomores and juniors.  Designed to provide students with information about allied medical profession of athletic training, as well as the athletic training major at Elon University.  This is a one day training held in February.  Information is usually available the first of February.

Enterprise Leadership Conference sponsored by The Jesse Helms Center. 
This is a 5-day conference for rising 10th, 11th and 12th  grade students at Wingate University or Campbell University.  The goals are to promote understanding of free market economics, personal responsibility, and the role of government in a constitutional republic.  Core programs and activities include:  Company competition, virtual trade mission, character education, laws of life essay contest and speakers.  Participants work in companies of 10 to 15 to manufacture a product or provide a service.  Activities include lessons on marketing, production, costs of doing business, profits, paying taxes and the importance of philanthropy.  Participants are exposed to successful entrepreneurs and leaders.  The conference is usually in June at Wingate University.  There is an approx. $25.00 processing fee.    You may also wish to visit their website for more information.

ETSU Quillen College of Medicine. 
Health Explorers II is a two-week summer residential science and math camp for students completing the 10th grade.  Its primary goal is to strengthen participants’ science and math skills.  Students will be provided with intensive instruction focusing on mathematical concepts and chemistry.  In addition to academic course work, students will have the opportunity to participate in career-planning activities.  Students must have a GPA of 2.5, be a citizen of the United States and be economically or educationally disadvantaged.  Cost is approx. $150.00.  Information is usually received in counseling dept. around the 1st of March.

James A. Harrell Jr. School of Government. 
For 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students, must be a resident of North Carolina. This is a 3 night, 4 day residency at North Carolina State University. Over the four day period, students meet with nearly 50 legislators to discuss careers in politics and issues ranging from education to the health and safety of North Carolina’s children and families.  These students become a working legislative body and discuss various sides of arguments including cell phone use in automobiles and sales tax increases on various products.  They do this while being lobbied by professionals who argue these issues everyday.  Students are provided with direct practical experience, and thereby gain first-hand knowledge of the legislative, judicial and executive branches of government.  Tuition is approximately $230.00.  Information is usually available in March in the counseling department or by calling NC State Univ. Junior Statesman Summer School

Miss Teen USA Pageants
Girls must be between 15-19, single, a US citizen and at least a six-month resident of North Carolina.  Contestants will be judged in three equal categories consisting of personal interview, swimsuit and evening gown.  There will not be a talent competition.  Once information packet is received by Miss Teen USA, she will be interviewed by phone.  Following the interview, the selection committee will notify the girls by mail if they have been selected to compete in the pageant. Applications and materials must be mailed and received by the State Pageant Office by June 1st.

National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine
This is for 10th and 11th graders whose GPA is 3.3 (B+) and are interested in a career of medicine.  The cost is approx. $2,205.00.  This includes accommodations, breakfasts and dinners, instruction, program materials.  This is held in the summer in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C.  Scholarships are offered through the program to help cover the costs.   For more information you may wish to visit their website at:

NC Renaissance for Rural High School for Sophomores

People To People Ambassador Programs – Student’s must have outstanding scholastic and leadership merit.  (Recommended students will receive a packet in the mail with information about this program, including the costs, where it is held, etc.)  Each program's activities emphasize leadership development, team building, community service, academic coursework, excursions and social interaction.  Students need to be in grades 6 through 12 at the time of travel to be eligible for the summit. Students reside in a college dormitory suite with one to three roommates of the same gender and approximate age. Rural High School Medical Camp, hosted by the James H. Quillen College of Medicine (ETSU). 
In an effort to increase the number of primary care physicians who choose to practice in rural areas, the Department of Family Medicine has sought to have a greater influence upon high school students during a period which is critical to their career determinations. Rural high school students eyeing a career in medicine and the health sciences can get an early glimpse into the field by entering the annual camp.  The camp encourages the students to consider a career that previously may have appeared out of reach and gives them a set of experiences to guide them for preparation for entering medical school. The medical camp is usually held in June of each year. Tuition for the summer program is approx. $125, which includes room, all meals, entertainment, and transportation. Summer College in Biotechnology and Life Sciences – at NC State 
For rising Juniors and Seniors.  Prerequisites:  High School Biology and Chemistry.  Must have a 3.5 weighted GPA. The Research Apprenticeship Program (RAP) is for rising juniors and seniors who wish to pursue careers in the science field.  Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA (science & overall), Quality of Essay, Telephone Interview, and Disadvantaged Status, (Preference given to North Carolina residents).  The Program exposes students to basic and/or clinical research through an apprenticeship experience.  Students will work on a scientific project under the guidance of a research scientist for seven weeks. Students will be able to expand their knowledge of and competence in science. Students will conduct science in creative ways, expand their appreciation of the investigative process, and investigate career prospects. At the completion of the program, participants will provide a written and oral presentation on their projects.  A stipend is awarded and on-campus housing is provided. Virginia Tech College of Engineering

Western Carolina Legislators’ School for Youth Leadership Development
Only two students can attend from Avery High per year.  Student must be in the 9th or 10th grade, must be willing to learn new leadership skills, stretch to do more than they think they can do, learn about themselves, broaden their vision of the world, have fun, live in the dorm for two weeks in July, and must provide their own transportation to and from Western Carolina University.  Information is available the end of January.
