Cane River Middle School
“Read and Feed”

The Eighth Grade Communication Skills Classes at Cane River Middle School were treated to a “Read and Feed” activity on the celebrated poet Edgar Allan Poe on Thursday, October 25, 2007 in the Media Center .

The students had recently studied Poe's life and his short stories with special emphasis on “The Tell-Tale Heart.”

Ms. Sharon Deyton, Media Specialist, dressed up as Poe and welcomed the students into Poe's home (the Media Center ). Ms. Teresa Angel prepared a colorful agenda of activities for each student. The Media Center was decorated in the time period of Poe's life. The students visited and chatted with “Mr. Poe” before they moved to the different activity stations.

Station I was the on-line biographical research with Ms. Deyton. Station II was “The Tell-Tale Heart” board game with Ms. Jeanette Henson and Ms. Linda Deyton. The teacher-made game included four categories: figurative language, comprehension, word pictures, and vocabulary. Station III was visiting the Poe Museum with Ms. Teresa Stiles and Ms. Bunny Bennett. Ms. Stiles and Ms. Bennett have actually visited the Poe Museum in Baltimore , Maryland . Ms. Stiles had called the Poe Museum prior to this activity and discovered that the museum was performing Poe's “The Tell-Tale Heart” this weekend! The final station, Station IV, was a visit to a room that was decorated according to a scene from the story where the students looked in on the crime scene. Ms. Christy Deyton, Sixth Grade Communication Skills Teacher, Ms. Holly Houchard, Eighth Grade Math Teacher, and Mr. Michael Neal, a Mars Hill College student, performed the roles in the scene.

The eighth grade students were also involved in a poll. They were asked to list their greatest fears. The top ten fears were:

Loss of a parent
Deep water (bottomless)
Serious, permanent injury
Death/dying/illness
Snakes
Scary movies
Bears
Cars/bad drivers/car wrecks
Failure in school
Small, closed in spaces

We would like to thank everyone who helped make this activity possible. It was very educational and also an extremely fun time for all - students and adults!

We were happy to have the presence of Dr. Iva Nell Buckner, member of the Yancey County Board of Education, join our celebration.

Micaville Elementary School Achieves High Growth School in Progress

Micaville Elementary School students, parents and staff got to harvest fun from last year's work! On Friday, October 12 th , the entire school community celebrated the accomplishments of last year's teaching and learning. Micaville enjoyed tremendous growth in their end-of-grade testing program being recognized by the state as a High Growth School in Progress. Various sponsors paid for inflatable play equipment that children got to enjoy free of charge. As darkness fell, everyone moved indoors for a “Poor Man's Supper”, games, cotton candy, and lots of other amusements. Micaville Elementary School 's fundraising event provided the community with a safe, fun family outing filled with plenty of pride to go around for everyone. Who knows what next year's celebration will be like if Micaville Elementary School keeps working and succeeding?
