Second Grade

We are a class that celebrates each other's differences.  Being different is what makes us who we are.  Each day we begin with Friendship Circle.  This is a time to share why our friends are so special to us.

Choice making plays a major role in our classroom.  Our class chooses the themes they want to explore on a monthly basis by classroom vote.  Each month we will send parents a news note about our chosen topics.

Together we learn to respect each other and the people within our society.  My students discover the importance of person first language and how to use that language each day.  Person first language is putting the person first.  For example instead of saying disabled person or blind person, you say a person with a disability or a person that is blind.  This is important because it teaches children that each person is of value.

Learning is unique.  I strive to teach each child new concepts based on their own personal learning style.  Some children learn best by seeing, hearing, touching, or doing.  I integrate all these ways of learning into my curriculum goals.

Homework is a part of learning responsibility, therefore, your child will have homework on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday of each week.  Assignments will be adapted according to your child's grade level.  For example if your child is in first grade, they will receive ten-minute assignments.  If they are in second grade, they will receive twenty-minute assignments.

You, as parents, have entrusted me with your most precious treasure, your child.  As an educator I respect your trust in me to provide your child with the best education possible, both academically and socially.
