At the April 4th regular meeting of the Yancey County Board of Education, Yancey County Schools Superintendent Dr. Tony Tipton announced the last day of school for Yancey County students and the date for Mountain Heritage High School Graduation.

Thursday, June 9, 2016, will be the last – half-day – of school for Yancey County students. Inclement weather in January and February had pushed the student end date to Monday, June 13th, however, meeting the state-mandated instructional hours of 1,025 per school year allows the Superintendent to forgive June 10th and 13th, making June 9th the final student day.

Mountain Heritage High School Graduation will be on Saturday, June 11th at 10:00 a.m. “Starting graduation earlier in the day helps with the problem of heat in the gymnasium. We want to keep our graduates, parents, and guests as cool and comfortable as possible during the graduation ceremonies,” stated Superintendent Dr. Tony Tipton.

Although this winter could be considered mild when compared to past winters, the threat of spring rains and flash floods can still cause an impact to school days and lost instructional hours. The YCS calendar still has a bank of instructional hours that could allow for 1-2 more days being forgiven should an unexpected spring snowstorm or flooding result in additional lost school time.

“We appreciate the patience of our students, parents, and staff as we have worked through this year’s school calendar,” added Dr. Tipton. “We understand that parents, students, and teachers all want to know the last day of school as soon as possible to begin making summer plans.”
