2018 Roadmap of Needs Released

This week, the 2018 edition of the NC Roadmap of Needs was released. Again this year, as in 2017, Yancey County Schools rank as the 8th best in the state. The NC Roadmap of Needs, sponsored by the Public School Forum of NC and the NC Center for Afterschool Programs, considers four educational criteria in determining their rankings. The four criteria are; graduation rate, 3rd grade reading proficiency, Math I proficiency, and AMO targets reached. A ranking of 8th is an improvement over earlier years. In the 2016 edition Yancey County Schools was ranked 13th. In the 2014th edition of the Roadmap of Needs, Yancey County Schools was listed at 16th. Five years ago, the 2013 edition listed Yancey County Schools as 24th. This steady improvement over the past few years is something we can all be proud of.

The Roadmap of Needs is a whole child needs assessment that includes 20 indicators of wellness across four domains: health, youth behavior and safety, education, and economic development. When looking at all four domains and the 20 economic factors, Our county ranks 33 in the state. In the other three domains, Yancey County ranked 88th in health, 50th in youth behavior and safety, and 44th in economic development. To read the full assessment go to:
