At its recent monthly meeting, the Yancey County Board of Education received a report from Superintendent Dr. Tony Tipton that students have completed the 2012-13 school year and all buses returned to schools safely. Dr. Tipton further reported that of the 180 days of school, Yancey County school buses booked a total of 400,680 miles and 304,380 passenger rides, without incident.

In the Good News portion of the meeting, the School Board recognized Ms. Brandi Silvers, volunteer at Clearmont Elementary School, as Yancey County Schools 2013 Volunteer of the Year. Ms. Silvers has volunteered at least one day a week all school year doing everything from tutoring to cleaning the cafeteria to cleaning flower beds. Board Vice Chairman Jack Tipton stated, “We began this program to spotlight all the good things volunteers do across the county. Ms. Silvers exemplifies what we are looking for in school volunteers. We are very pleased to be able to honor in tonight’s meeting for her contributions to Yancey County Schools.” Clearmont Elementary Principal added during the meeting, “Brandi is such a happy presence around our school - everyone always looks forward to seeing her smiling face. We are so very happy she has been chosen for this honor.”

In personnel items, the School Board approved the employment of Miranda Wheeler, math teacher at Cane River Middle School, to fill the position of assistant principal, left vacant by Miranda Elkins who has moved to South Toe Elementary as principal.

Cane River Principal Alton Robinson said of Ms. Wheeler’s, “Ms. Wheeler is an excellent educator that leads by example. She has many qualities that will make her successful at Cane River Middle School. Ms. Wheeler is strong academically and relates well with students and faculty. CRMS is blessed to have her as an assistant principal.” Ms. Wheeler will begin her new assignment July 1st.

In unfinished business, Dr. Tipton informed the Board that the MHHS Visitor Bleachers Replacement Project is on schedule and should be complete before the start of school in August.
