In a moment that will be etched in their memories forever, two Mountain Heritage High School freshmen, Santos Mondragon-Wright and Dacolby McGee, were invited to attend the Experience Hendrix tour stop in Charlotte, NC on April 9, 2025 —only to be surprised with something even more unforgettable.

As part of Experience Hendrix’s heartfelt outreach to communities impacted by last year’s devastating Hurricane Helene, Santos and Dacolby were gifted  guitars live on stage, presented personally by Janie Hendrix.

All students at Mountain Heritage were invited to share how their lives had been impacted by Hurricane Helene through a schoolwide Google form. The goal was to identify students whose connection to music had helped them through the hardships brought on by the storm—students whose stories reflected resilience, passion, and hope.

Out of many heartfelt submissions, Santos Mondragon-Wright and Dacolby McGee, both freshmen, were selected for their powerful words and moving experiences. Their love for music stood out—music not only helped them cope, but gave them purpose during one of the most difficult times in their young lives.

Santos Mondragon-Wright has been immersed in music for as long as he can remember. The loss of his Fender Squier Debut guitar during the hurricane was deeply personal—music has always been his emotional outlet and creative force. Receiving the guitar has not only restored his ability to play but reignited his passion with a whole new sense of inspiration.

Dacolby McGee found strength in music during one of the darkest times of his life. After losing his home to the hurricane, he leaned heavily on music as a source of peace. The new guitar represents more than just a replacement—it’s a reminder that hope and opportunity can emerge even after loss.

Mountain Heritage High School and Yancey County Schools are overwhelmed with gratitude for this incredible experience. Seeing two of their own recognized in such a powerful, public way touched the hearts of students, staff, and families throughout the community. In a year marked by loss and rebuilding, this night was a powerful reminder of music’s ability to lift hearts and change lives.

Experience Hendrix and Janie Hendrix have given more than just instruments—they’ve given hope, recognition, and encouragement to two remarkable young musicians and a community that continues to rebuild.

To the Experience Hendrix team and the entire crew who made this moment possible: thank you. Your generosity will echo far beyond this night.  From the mountains to the stage, from heartbreak to hope—this was truly a night to remember.
