Welcome to Cane River Middle School! We are located in beautiful Western North Carolina near the Blue Ridge Parkway and Mt. Mitchell State Park. Cane River serves students in grades 6-8. We offer a wide variety of extra-curricular activities including sports programs, clubs, and the Youth to Youth after school program.

Cane River opened its doors in 1958 as Cane River High School, one of two high schools in the county. In 1976, Yancey County consolidated the two high schools, Cane River and East Yancey, into Mountain Heritage High School. The two high schools were then turned into two middle schools.

Visitors to the School

Parents and others are welcome and encouraged to visit Cane River Middle School . For the safety of those within the school and to avoid disruption of instructional time, all visitors must first report to the office.

Visits to individual classrooms during instructional time ( 8:00 – 3:30 ) are permitted only with approval of the administration and teacher and as long as the duration or frequency does not interfere with the delivery of instruction or disrupt the normal school environment.

It is unlawful for any person to remain on school property after having been directed to leave the property by an authorized person.

All visitors are expected to demonstrate the highest standards of courtesy and conduct and to abide by the visitation policy.

Directions to Cane River Middle School

From Asheville:

Take Exit #9 off of Future I-26 onto 19E. Travel approximately 12 miles, you will see on the left Prices Creek General Store turn left. At the STOP sign turn right, the School will be on your left.

From Spruce Pine:

Keep on 19E heading west. Travel approximately 15 miles to Burnsville. Stay on 19E heading west for about 4 miles. You will see Riverside Grocery on the left,Cane River School road is approximately 1/4 mile on the right. Take a right the school is about 3/4 mile on the right.
